The Head, the Heart and What it Means to See
If a book guides you, my feeling is that such a book would not be as reliable a guide as love. Best to follow the heart, even foolishly at times, if one is to be a real human being.
My heart tells me that the world is in a desperate state of crisis right now. I feel driven to stand up and do my part to try to lead where I can, and to reduce suffering where I can, and to never lose sight of the reality that it's not really me who is doing any of it.
The human experience is but a fraction of who and what we are. The only way to truly know this is to find out for yourself. From a conscious state it is self evident that nothing needs to be done. Harmony and chaos are the same things, only called by different names, depending on where one is standing when it all goes down. Creation and destruction are the same thing.
It our is human heart that makes us care. Many new agers have told me that I should tune the world out, be somehow above it all, see it only as an illusion. I find the proposition to be heartless.
In fact, the world is real and unreal simultaneously. In fact there is no separation between the spiritual and material worlds. Religion is an attempt to organize all of this and in the process the essential truth is lost.
See the thread of truth that runs through the story, sometimes visibly and sometimes invisibly. This is not "belief". This is what is meant by "direct perception".

I believe it is possible to "tune the world out" ... the physical one, but as you said we can't help but care. We shut off from the chaos but not from the compassion. IMHO all is as it is meant to be and everyone is exactly where they are meant to be according to their understanding. However we are All One, so tho I may shut off the actions in this world, I don't shut off the Spiritual connections from All That Is. The chaos is the part of this world that I am not "of". This is, what I think the "New Agers" are talking about. To shut off from what is only temporary and connect to the eternal.
"I am in my own little world...but that's okay, they know me here".

I agree with you totally on this one. I think as I've matured I realize that, ultimately only what you "give" truly matters. All else is vanity. Giving is the ultimate expression of love. God so loved the world that he "gave"...
