Wishful Thinking: A Cheap Alternative to Inquiry

The newer popular alternatives to religion, that come in the form of new age spirituality such as "The Secret" are just as loony as the promise of heaven for the believer, and a lake of hellfire for the nonbeliever. This ever so intoxicating form of…Continue

Meditations on Ego and Enlightenment - by Eric Allen Bell

Over a long enough period of time, the survival rate for your body is zero.  Contained within the body is the brain and one of the functions of the brain is the ego.  The ego is the self concept of the brain-body organism and it does not like what was just said one bit.

And there are different states of consciousness than just ego.  The ego is like a dog you bring with you on a journey. Untrained, it will run off, bite others and come back to bite you.  But trained and disciplined it knows its place. It can sense things, warn you of danger, protect you.  As the saying goes, "Ego is an excellent servant and a horrible master".  …

Is There Proof That "God" Exists? - by Eric Allen Bell

One's own existence seems self-evident....

And yet there really isn't any proof -

not objective proof anyway -

that you exist.

Who Am I? - by Eric Allen Bell

When it comes to the subject of Enlightenment I am no authority. I do not possess special knowledge nor do I profess to speak to you now from some elevated state. On all matters Divine there is but one authority and that is The Great Mystery.

Enlightenment is often said to be a state of conscious communion with Divine Source.

According to some spiritual traditions this state is something of a finish line. One's existence is seen to be a cycle of birth, death and rebirth as one's soul perfects their karma and eventually reaches a state of Nirvana or pure…

What is the True Meaning of Yoga? - by Eric Allen Bell

With each passing day, as I look inward and as I take in what is going on with the world outside, my heart opens. And the more it opens the more I understand why I have kept it shut for so long. The more my heart opens, the more I understand why the world has closed its heart.

I find it harder and harder to criticize the world from a place of anger or disappointment. The screwed up world and the screwed up self are not only reflections of each other, they are one in the same. I am the suffering and the beauty and everything in between - not as some new philosophy but as a felt experience, moment by…

What Happens When I Die? - by Eric Allen Bell

Art by Alex Grey

In order to answer the question, "What happens when I die?" I feel it is important to take a look at something a bit less speculative and that is the question of what happens when we live.

There is no way to understand death if you don't know what life is. What happens between the moment you take your first breath and the moment you draw your very last?

Who is it that is looking out through your eyes?

Is it not the same quality of awareness that existed right before you read these words? Is that quality of awareness not the same quality that existed yesterday and the day before?

And that awareness, the pure state of awareness was there before you could form words or even knew your name. It is independent of personal history, of labels, of…

Atman is Brahman - by Eric Allen Bell

If you consider yourself to be on any kind of spiritual path, you very likely have had a tendency to be too hard on yourself.  You try not to think negative thoughts, to avoid judging others, to avoid "sin".  One definition of the word "sin" is "separation from God". We want to avoid our dark side and become more of "how we are supposed to be". This way of thinking occurs probably not as the result of religion, but rather religion has sprouted as the result…

Meditation on Being - by Eric Allen Bell

"Meditation on Being"

By Eric Allen Bell

Being is what you are. Nothing you do will make you more or less than that.

Whether you are a criminal or a saint, your state of Being is unchanged and eternal.

Only the awareness changes.

Nothing you do in the world will change your state of Being.

Whether you are a good spouse, devoutly religious, a high achiever or a dope fiend - there is nothing to be done to make you better or worse at the level of Being.

Building temples does not bring about salvation when…

What Does It Mean to be Free?

Have you ever felt caged inside your body, longing to be free? Who is that which has such a desire? If you are only your flesh and bones, then who or what is it that longs to break free of all of it?

Is it just a chemical reaction in the brain, buzzing inside your head - a frustration, an agitation, a scratching at the inside of a prison wall?  Who is scratching?  Who are you, if you are not the prison itself but the one who feels trapped within it?

There are men with letters after their names, resigned to a certain cynicism, who will tell you that consciousness is merely a projection of the brain, merely the result of neurological activity. And yet…

The Part is Not Separate From the Whole - by Eric Allen Bell

If the body gets the flu, I'm not sick, the body is.

If the mind is traumatized, I'm not traumatized, the mind is.

If the heart is broken, I'm not broken, the heart is.

I am not who I think I am - I am therefore I think.

The part is not separate from the whole.

Hello Eric, and thanks for the Friend add; it's nice to meet you after all these years.  I much admire the work you do.  I have a blog you might check out sometime, that's more selfish, concerned with my odd circumstances and a novel I recently completed (it will never be finished) that was inspired by an enlightening experience I had 6 years ago after the deaths of my then-extant family members, the loss of my job, home, and possessions, and the bottom generally falling out of my life.  Until you have lost everything, you cannot gain anything.  Anyway, thank you again, and the link to my site is here below.

Hello Eric, thanks for adding me. So pleased to see your a spiritual man. Spirituality have been kidnapped by the male dominant, established religions, mainly in our days the Abrahamic religions, but not only them. Returning to spirituality as a true path for a human, without a feeling of being odd or having guilt for it, but to be meet by appreciation and respect might be a future we will see.

I have run across a genius who has uncorked more of the universe's natural spiritual laws than anything else I've ever tried (my previous favorites were Yogananda and Hindu raja yoga but these techniques take forever and are hit and miss).  These technique simply work, relatively quickly, every time if done exactly, similar to chemistry and physics laws in the physical universe to take you out the top.

How to Realize Nothingness in Meditation
